WHERE’S WINONA? by Steve Nadis

Earlier today, a Boston Globe sports columnist took a gratuitous dig at Winona Ryder in a piece that was supposed to be about the current Red Sox-Yankees series. Ryder was a pretty big star not too long ago, and she had talent as well. She was immortalized in the book “Primary Colors” by a character (a political consultant modeled after James Carville) who used the term “a real Winona” to describe a hot woman. Yet now she’s reduced to being the butt of jokes–even by award-winning sportswriters who have plenty of legitimate targets to pick on. The question is why? Is it all because of one shoplifting rap? If so, that seems awfully unfair. Plenty of people have done worse, lots worse, and bounced back. Right now Ryder seems to be “Girl Interrupted,” but maybe the woman that girl has since become will get another chance.

She should have named a covert CIA agent instead of shoplifting. You get a pass for that nowadays.

    Well put, Doc, as always.

Though I used to worship the ground Winona walked on, my understanding is that she was (and maybe still is) a little off her rocker and very prima donna-ish.

Maybe that was just a bad phase she was going through, or maybe that’s just the way she’s always been. Don’t know. But it takes time to get past a bad rap in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, she’s getting older and lots of other, younger, hotter starlets are scrambling out of the woodwork behind her. So maybe the Hollywood producers have decided she’s not worth it anymore. Or maybe she’s just taking a break and getting herself put back together again.

I hope it’s the latter, because–high maintenance or not–I did enjoy seeing her on the screen. And not just because she was pretty as hell.

Also, I loved DrMax’s comment. Perfect!

Thank you, Gatemouth, for your trenchant observations on L’affaire Winona. Everyone loves a great comeback story & maybe we’ll see one here. I agree with you on another score: The Good Doctor hit it out of the park.

Snark: Are you angling for a job at "Us" Magazine? [A.k.a. the magazine about "Them."] I have a contact at "In-Touch Weekly" that I can put you in touch with if you are looking to further your incipient career as a celebrity commentator.

If you’re in a position to offer, I’m in a position to talk. How ’bout lunch?
