The award for the steadiest, most predictable commentary goes to Burt, who knows how to put me in my place in those rare instances when my ego gets the better of me. The aforementioned Dr. Max captures the award in the often-elusive area of “funny humor writing.” Gatemouth wins hands-down for “outstanding contributions in the field bumper sticker humor.” I hope you won’t find it patronizing of me to say: “You have a gift, son.” CheneyLover (aka Little Red Ride-Up, Mike Gorman, and other obscure handles) wins for all-around wit, irony, and biting commentary. Lindsey, meanwhile, wins the “most supportive” award, which can help a lonely blogger continue in this most solitary of avocations. Finally, I’d like to thank all those other people who write in from time to time to say what a tremendous writer I am and remind me that this blog is a “national treasure” and “bright spot in the otherwise dim realm of the blogosphere.” Thank you for saying that, and I want to thank the rest of you for thinking it even if you haven’t yet had the chance to say it.
This blog IS a national treasure. Kind of like Mount Rushmore, only without the ugly heads, or the engineering problems, or the risk that George Bush’s face will show up here some day…

Thank you Gatemouth for the vote of confidence. You–& a few select others–are one of the main reasons I do this. After what you just said, I’m tempted to strip the "most supportive" award away from Lindsey & give it to you, though I fear that might set a bad precedent. Rest assured that Bush won’t appear on Mt. Rushmore if I have any say in the matter. I could easily see him appearing on a popular line of dart boards though, & that might be a nice complement to our future bumper sticker business.
I guess I should feel honored, though I’m surprised you contemplated giving my award to Gatemouth after just a few kind words.
See, I knew if I gave you an award, you’d give me an award! I feel like we’re a couple of big shots in Hollywood!
It sounds a little clubby the way you describe it, but that’s not how it was at all. Your comment was like a wake-up call to to me–a reminder that I was long past due to thank all the little people out there who, in their quiet (and sometimes not so quiet) ways, have helped make this blog what it is.
As for you Lindsey, not to worry: I’d never give your award away. You deserve all the credit and fame that has come your way.
Thanks for the award. Now I can say what I want, without having to worry about being polite and all that, right?
