AN APOLOGY — by Steve Nadis

As some might notice, though most will not, I have done something I’ve never done before at Call Me Snake: I’ve deleted a post. Not just one post, but seven–all of which were peripherally related to an individual who is now facing criminal charges. I never meant to “drag this person through the mud,” as I was charged with, or to add to his legal difficulties. It all started innocently enough–I was simply intrigued by a name. An idle post about that led to some comments from people in the know, which in turn led to inquiries from reporters at the New Yorker and other newspapers trying to find leads for their own investigations. Things kind of took off from there; I played along for fun, not thinking that for some people this was no joking matter.

I’m sure those who reacted most strongly to my posts have no idea what this blog is about and, in fact, I could not explain it in 200 words or less. But the point I’d like to make, in closing, is that I never meant to defame someone who, evidently, is widely loved and has done many good things in his community. If I unintentionally did so, I apologize. Rest assured that no harm was intended.

Hey Snake, I don’t think you did anything all that bad. As a reader, I just sort of went along with it. But I guess you have to be careful when you’re writing about "real people," as opposed to someone like the President

  2. Paul Statt says:

That’s great snake, but now some of us who wanted to set the record straight with Finnegan don’t have his e-mail address or phone number. Maybe you could e-mail to me, then delete this comment as well.

  3. Snake says:

Thanks Lindsey for that vote of confidence. I think I know what you mean–about the president not being "real people."

  4. Snake says:

OK, Paul. Here’s how you and others can reach Bill Finnegan at the New Yorker: bill_finnegan@newyorker.com 212-286-5621

  5. DrMax says:

Well of all the….so what does this guy think Finnigan is going write about? What an all around swell chap he is?

  6. Digory says:

You did the right thing in deleting the comments and apologizing. Its clear that you are sensible, and it takes a man (or a woman) to express their opinions on a blog for everyone to see.

  7. MarcoPolo says:

Well! Wasn’t expecting that. Guess those Google computers in Palo Alto won’t be directing the curious, the frustrated & the (apparently) downright angry to your Blog anymore now that the Aforementioned no longer appears in print, as it were. Maybe it’s just as well.
But how else would I have found this entertaining backwater amongst a myriad of similar star clouds. We live in an enigma of reality.
And, oh yeah, Snake, they’re going to disconnect you soon. None of this is real. But you amused a few of the Porthole Overlords."What an imagination!", they’ve quipped.

  8. Snake says:

Hi Digory — thanks for your note. And sorry for the shocker, MarcoPolo. I had been having fun with that "series," but evidently I crossed the line in the minds of a few people so I decided to drop it. I appreciate your contributions & hope you find something else of interest in these pages, even if I don’t directly mention the strange case that brought us together.
