BENEATH CONTEMPT (Another “Assault on Blog Precinct 13″) —– by Steve Nadis

In a recent comment, regarding the matter of certain improprieties allegedly committed at various libraries in this country, I was called a “member in good standing” of the “gutter press.” That stung a little though not too bad, and after awhile I came to like it. At least I’d finally reached some destination after nine months of blogging. (Some might point out that in nine months, people have been known to accomplish much more–giving birth to a sweet, innocent child, for instance. That is surely not the case here.)

Months ago, I was also called “liberal pantywaste (sic),” courtesy of the Comments section of this blog, but that one I kind of liked. It was novel and I’d never seen the expression used, or misused, in that particular way before. The thing that bothered me most in the recent attacks on my prose, and even my personhood itself, was when the critic referred to my “smarmy little posts.” My posts may be”little” at times, I agree, but to call them “smarmy” betrays a fundamental lack of understanding. Nor did I appreciate the word “sniggering” applied in this context. The definition of “snigger,” according to my dictionary (Oxford American), means to “snicker”–to emit a “sly giggle.” But I’m not a giggler, in any way, shape, or form, so this is clearly a case of mistaken identity. The defense rests.

I like "smarmy." I think it’s just right.

  2. Snake says:

    Et tu, Burte?

  3. H. Burt III says:

You couldn’t leave it alone. First you make this grand apology and walk away. But there you are again, back in the gutter.

  4. MarcoPolo says:

I’ll be a willing defense witness. I think it would be difficult to convince anyone in-the-know that whatever type of heresay & rumour, opinion or wisecrack is made (which is what blogs are all ABOUT -for chrissake) could ever "add" to the legal difficulties someone might face in a real, tangible court of law. Emotions can run high, as they apparently did in this case. Some comments could be construed as vindictive. Some disparraged, for sure. But Burt has a point. It’s time to ignore the corpse in this gutter (NO, not literally!) & move on…

  5. Snake says:

Good to hear from you, Marko. Maybe I should have stuck it out. [Can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.] Though I feared all my former classmates would rise up and have me tarred&feathered for dishonoring another former classmate. But yes, I’ll try to take your advice and Burt’s as well–time to move on. Of course, I can be allowed the occasional backtrack every now and then, can’t I?

Y’know that just might be a better name than "Snake". The Smarmy, Liberal Painty Waist, Sniggering, Gutter Press, Dishonoring Blogger. Doesn’t roll of the tongue as well, but I would definately read a blog with that title.

  7. Snake says:

That’s a sensational idea. I’ll be starting a new blog any day now. You just might have done what many have tried to do before–kill Call Me Snake.

  8. Digory says:

    Hey Polo,
BITFW, stop acting as if you are "in the know". You dont know Forbes at the present, you knew him in highschool. The man that wrote the comment that has been quoted so much actually is, "in the know". In the future dont try to bring attention to yourse. Keep up the good work Snake, the "Things that spilled" was very amusing.

Hi Digs — Thanks for your note. I won’t try to get between you & Marko, though I will point out that he encouraged me to "move on" and leave the Forbes matter behind, which I’ve tried to do. I’m glad you liked "The things that spilled." There’s definitely more to report on that front, including a vast assortment of things that spilled this very day & it’s not over yet…

  10. Digory says:

Thanks Snake, for reminding me of thats fact. I just couldn’t stand all the "in the know" crap that was going around. It seems i have painted Polo a bad picture which i apologize for. Please post more things that spilled because it shows that i am not alone in the world of spilling things.

    au revoir

    Digs

  11. Snake says:

OK Digs, I’ll get on it. A lot of things spilled yesterday (my 3-year-old is rather clumsy and my 6-year-old had her moments yesterday as well) but now it’s all jumbled together into one big mess. I’ll try to keep better notes henceforth. And it’s good to know that my posts occasionally strike a chord, not only with regard to the Forbes backlash…

  12. Digory says:

Yes Snake, it seems you have the entry codes to peoples deep feelings, the question is, did you really get them by selling your soul to the devil? Let the truth be revieled!

  13. Snake says:

Hey Digs — I sure hope not, because when you sell your soul to the devil, most people would want some kind of serious payback&that I have not seen…
