ALMOST AN EVEN LOWER LOW ————- by Steve Nadis
Yesterday, after stealing my daughter’s lunch money (and feeling my self-esteem hit record lows–think crash of 1929), I had another unworthy impulse, even worse than the last. My back, about which too much has been said of late, was feeling creaky, and I almost stole the last bit of pain medication from our kitten who was recovering from minor surgery. (She got “fixed,” as they say, though I’m not sure she sees things that way.) Fortunately, my wife ground up that little pill and mixed it in the cat food (don’t worry, I’m not that low yet) before I could act on my untoward impulse. That little act on her part not only helped Sunshine, our kitten, sleep peacefully last night, it also turned my life around. After coming close to hitting rock bottom–seeing the rocks without quite touching them–things are looking up from here.

Sunshine?????? Wait, don’t tell me. Your daughter named the kitten, didn’t she? Children should not be allowed to name pets. Dolls, stuffed animals and any other inanimate objects but not living, breathing animals. My heart goes out to that poor furry creature.
You guessed right. Our daughters named our kittens Sunshine & Moonshine when they (my daughters, not the kittens) were 2&5 yrs old. The names, I’m surprised to admit, have stood the test of time.
I think you are being too rough on yourself about the daughter’s money in the backpack. Whenever I steal anything, I just put it back twicefold. There, you’ve paid interest. (winking)…. Now, even today after my headache, I don’t think I could take my dog’s epilepsy medicine. gag…..maybe it is a man’s thing. Glad to hear you are on the way up. Maybe we’ll pass each other on the rungs…..
Have you considered a support group, like AA or AlAnon? I’m not sure what the exact group would be: Kitty Kleptos Anonymous? DAMNATION (Dads Against Money and Narcotics Acquired Through Immoral Opportunistic Naughtiness)? Also, you might be the only one in the group, since your particular problems seem to be a little bit more "special" than most peoples. But I think you would still benefit from the kind of give and take a group offers, even if you’re the one doing all the giving and taking.
Oh one more thing: your kitty’s obviously an "enabler". You might want to talk to her about getting help, too.
Thanks WW for your support, though I don’t realistically see us passing on the rungs. Given your “Windfall” and other winning qualities, I trust I’ll stay many rungs below.
Thank you too, Gatemouth. The "give and take" of a group might be helpful, as you suggest, though in my case there may be a little more taking than giving. I also appreciate how you’ve tried to lay some of the blame on my cat who is an enabler. I couldn’t agree more. In fact, it’s her problem, not mine. Maybe she’s the one who needs a group.
