LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF TORTURE — by Steve Nadis
Bush insists that military prisoners or “detainees,” as he and his coconspirators prefer to call them (because of the greater “flexibility” it gives us), are treated lawfully and that the United States never tortures captives. (Violence, abuse, and degradation perhaps, but never “torture.”) If all this were true–and no one who knows anything of the goings-ons at Abu Ghraib and Gitmo’ believes this for a minute–why has Dick Cheney made it his goal to defeat John McCain’s amendment that would keep the U.S. from employing cruel, inhuman, or degrading tactics? Why is the evil Cheney lobbying to make the CIA exempt from international rules of conduct?
It’s a disgusting position to take, I admit, yet I’m glad Cheney is playing such a visible role in this debate, which lowers our standing in the world to an all-time low point. There’s nothing to cheer about here, but at least the veil has finally been lifted and everyone gets to see what this abomination of an administration is all about. And what we see is unremitting ugliness. Now that we see it, what will we do?

I didn’t think it was possible for our standing in the world community to get any lower. And I thought the veil was lifted well before the second abomination, I mean election. Sorry, I get a little hot under the collar about this stuff because I work with a guy who thinks W walks on water. He forces me to listen to conservative talk radio for two hours of my shift before he goes home. I’m thinking of taking a sledge hammer to his damn radio.
Now that you see it, what will you do?
The rest of the world holds its breath while you (i.e. US citizens) ponder about it and hope that next time around -come, elections- things will be very, very different… for your country as well as the fates of countries elsewhere.
If we didn’t have to ability to torture we wouldn’t have gotten that great intel on Iraq’s nuclear capabilities. And without that, we couldn’t have started this well planned, successful war we’re in. Thanks Dick, you’re a true patriot!
Let’s put W and Cheny in the flotsam and jetsam pile where they belong. (I am using my new vocabulary words.)
ummm Cheney…..I can spell. Really I can.
Thanks for the thoughtful comments. Roses, I feel your pain. FW, you said it well: In light of all the above, what will we do? Doc, you’re right about that "intelligence" we got; it’s not only good intelligence, it’s to die for. And thank you WW for finding two candidates for the flotsam&jetsam hall of shame.
I’ll tell ya what we should do. Stop using damned euphamisms; stop caring what the wussies of the world think. It’s torture plain and simple. Use the word, use the act.
BTW, Cheney is pronounced CHEE-NEE.
Personally, I find the act of torture abhorrent. But I agree with you on one point–if that’s what we’re doing, we should use the word so that the people of this country know what’s being done in the name of freedom.

I agree w/Zard. Roses should smash that radio with a sledgehammer to make her point , doing it "humanly," of course.
