A YULETIDE COMPROMISE ————— by Steve Nadis

President Bush had threatened to veto John McCain’s bill banning torture. We never do anything like the, Bush maintained, but it’s nice to have the option. Given that McCain’s bill had strong backing in both the House and Senate, and with the approach of Christmas, Bush and his advisors realized that a tough anti-anti-torture stance might isolate our leader further, making him look like a latter-day Scrooge or worse. So yesterday Bush agreed to a “compromise,” which allows him to torture people “just a little bit.” Bush had been angry at McCain for taking such a hard line against torture but yesterday the President took the high road, saying that McCain is still “a good man,” despite his opposition to torture.
