ENOUGH WITH THAT ELVIS ALREADY! — by Steve Nadis

I know I’m supposed to like Elvis, if not love Elvis, because everyone is supposed to. It’s been the “in” thing for as long as I can remember. But “The Pelvis” never did it for me. I never liked the music and now that I learned he was a big admirer of Richard Nixon–and even volunteered to help Nixon fight illicit drug use (a strange choice for a pill-popping junkie or perhaps I should say two pill-popping junkies)–I like him even less as a person. So I must confess that I sympathized with the woman in Australia charged with stabbing her boyfriend with a scissors because he wouldn’t stop playing the Presley hit, “Burning Love,” over and over again. I’m just glad I wasn’t put in that same situation. I’d like to think I wouldn’t have reacted the same way, but until you’re put into a situation like that, you never know.

  1. GASP…….you don’t like ELVIS???? Who cares about his politics? Please please don’t tell me that you don’t like Johnny Cash……..I won’t be able to bear it.

I was never a fan of the Man in Black. However, I did enjoy the music in "Walk the Line." I still find the Elvis stuff hard to listen to.

  3. Who DO you like to listen to Snake? Please please don’t say The Beatles.

  4. ardist says:

So Interesting! As I was contemplating how to support Snake, because Elvis wasn’t my favorite either, I remembered I learned to love music when the Beatles invaded. :)
They changed the way I looked at life. But, I agree, politics, or even drugs for that matter, doesn’t nullify tallent. Though the latter, I believe, did seem to take some of the joy out of the Beatles early music.

Snake, I like your short blog posts. Easy chew.

  6. Snake says:

Thanks Ardist, I like the short ones too. Easy to write, and easy to read–or chew, as the case may be. I’m embarrassed to say I don’t listen to much music at all these days, Windfall. Tracy Chapman is one of my favorites but I haven’t heard her latest album. Like Ardist, I grew up with the Beatles but I don’t care for that stuff anymore. I can still enjoy some music from the 70s like Stephen Stills & Cat Stevens.

  7. I never got the Elvis hype either (or the Beatles hype for that matter). Although I like John Lennon, the 4some together with matching suits and limp hairdos… not my thing.

  8. Snake says:

    Thanks FW; it is agreed.

  9. I like Dan Fogelberg and James Taylor.

  10. Snake says:

Commendable choices. I saw JT "live" last year.

  11. Whitey says:

I’m with Windfall on this, Elvis is huge. Ok, I don’t actually own any of his music, and much of it sounds dated now, but it’s more listenable that most music from the 50s.

“Burning Love” is not one of his best songs, and anything can become torture if you hear it too much. My college roommate listened to Bruce Springsteen ALL the time, and it quickly went from mildly pleasant it to nails on a chalkboard.

As a person, I like Elvis more than, say, Frank Sinatra. And I like his singing a lot more (For me, Sinatra’s signature flat notes are grating). Given his background, the times he lived in, and the crushing celebrity he had to live with, I think Elvis did OK.

  12. Snake says:

That’s fair enough, Whitey. I’ve got nothing against Elvis & am not inclined to stab anyone over it. The music doesn’t do it for me, personally, but plenty of other people like him, if not love him.

  13. Tricia says:

Sorry, Snake, I’m afraid you will always have to put up with Elvis fans. We’ll always be here because Elvis was the greatest.

Anyone is entitled to his own taste, though.

However the guy who loved the Elvis record “Burning Love” should not put up with a woman who doesn’t love Elvis!! Why didn’t he dump her to begin with???

  14. Snake says:

Excellent points, Tricia. You’re right; opposites may attract but that match could never have lasted.
