A PERFECT DAY — by Steve Nadis
I’ve never gotten into the ritual patriotism that is di rigeur on the 4th of July. That said, this was still, for me, just about a perfect day. I spent all day on the beach playing volleyball, swimming, and body surfing. This evening I watched a silly Disney comedy from the 60s with my daughter. (She laughed loudest during the ridiculous chase sequence.) Then, after helping to put the children to bed, I hopped on my bike and went to watch Boston’s fireworks display over the Charles River–the best I’ve ever seen. Afterwards, I raced off on my bike and got ahead of all the traffic–thousands and thousands of people–within just a few blocks, which is a very satisfying feeling, second only to seeing the fireworks themselves.

You’re merciless. It’s bad enough people have to pay an arm and a leg for fuel, only to sit in unmoving traffic as they watch you… you “road tease” innocently riding your bike, wind blowing in your hair, whizzing on by… I bet you were grinning too!
Yeah, I did feel kind of guilty (an estimated 500,000 people watched the fireworks) but it also felt great.
thats ok ,, people all over the world
watch the american fireworks ,,
and try to keep ahead ,, as not to get killed,,
and i dont mean ,only the 4th of july ,,stuff.
so enjoy that gratifying feeling ,, its
unfortunately…………… not mutual ,
with the rest of the world.
sorry to be a party pooper ,,used to be very proud
this day a long time ago ,, “nevermore”
…………………..U N L E S S..?
I know what you mean Z, I have mixed feelings too. But putting politics and all that aside, beach volleyball is hard to beat.
Wait a sec . . . where was your wife? Didn’t she get to see the fireworks? Or did you make her stay home and babysit?????
You got me on that one, OR. Somebody had to stay home with the kids, as the fireworks in Boston don’t start until after 10:30p.m. So it was not the “Perfect Day,” after all. It would have been if the whole family could have joined me. Thanks for prompting this correction.
