OBAMA’S READY. ARE WE? — by Steve Nadis

With Barack Obama’s recent admission that he is contemplating a run for the presidency in 2008, several questions come to mind: Is America ready for an African-American president? (I hope so.) Is Obama ready for that exalted office after less than two years in the U.S. Senate? Is America ready for a candidate who has not even completed a single term in the Senate? And more importantly, is America ready for a president who is several years my junior?

  1. After GW I reckon America is ready. On their knees ready.

Well put, FW. I was thinking the same, though I never got around to saying it in print. As you suggest, how much less qualified can you get? The bar is set pretty darn low.

    a shame- but i think the name’s cursed.(too similar)
One would hope the average American voter wouldn’t let this influence them but I’m a pessimist, I’m afraid.
Not that it has to be a ‘Washington’, mind you.
Just a non-foriegn sounding name. (Hope I’m wrong)

  4. Snake says:

    I don’t often say this Marco, but I hope you’re wrong too…

  5. gatemouth says:

Nothing personal, Snake, but I INSIST that the next President be several years your junior.

As for the name, I’m sure it will be used against him. But given a choice between a lot of corrupt old-guard Democrats who have nice Anglo names but can’t speak their minds on anything and a new guy with a suspicious name but enough intelligence and chutzpah to say what he means, I think most voters will go for the new guy. (I hope.)

I hope you’re right, Gatemouth, I hope you’re right. As for the age thing, that’s something I’m going to have to get over. For years, most of the doctors I’ve seen have been younger than me, and that’s not going to change, so why not presidents?
