TAKE GOOD CARE NOT TO SAY THIS —– by Steve Nadis

The other day, I saw two women saying goodbye to each other (in a coffee house, or something like that, or was it in the lobby of a gym?). One put her hand on top of her friend’s hand and said: “Take good care.” It was a well-intentioned phrase, in all likelihood, but I for one take offense. What’s wrong with simply saying, “Take care”? By saying “take good care,” one is almost implying that “take care” is not good enough and that those who employ the short form don’t really care all that much. But the revised expression is inflationary in my opinion. If we go down that path, soon everyone will be saying “take very good good” and before long “take exceptionally good care.” If that happens, we would have traded in a perfectly acceptable two-syllable phrase for a cumbersome and unwieldly eight-syllable one. Well, that’s all I have to say on this subject for now except for some parting words of advice. If anyone says “take good care” to you, reply in as polite a manner as possible: “No thanks. But I will take care.”

  1. Snake? This post doesn’t sound like you. Are you ok? You sound way too laid back to get wound up over something like this. But, just to be on the safe side…….take care.

Didn’t we (meaning society “we”) have this same conversation about “Have a nice day”? All that happened there was that it becamse a cliche and the punchline of a lot of comedy routines.

  3. Daphne says:

I’m always left to wonder, take care of what? My teeth? My my car? Oh… myself? Glad there’s always someone to tell me to take care of myself, because otherwise I just might forget. It always sounds slightly condescending, yet I utter it myself for lack of any other conversation-ender.

{yawn} Snake…this post is a “trifle”, a frivolous attempt to flex your intellect’s ‘pinky’.
How about tacklin’ all the idiotic converstation Starters? (e.g: “SO…How are WE DOIN’ today?” As if I’m supposed to know how he/she is.. & what ‘group’ they are part of!)

  5. Snake says:

Yes MP it is a “trifle” at best & maybe not even that. “Take care of what?” I like that Daphne, yet like you I say it too. Good point. This one is not even important enough to become a cliche. Yes WFW, I’m fine, just writing a dumb post. Why? For the hell of it……………………………………………………………………….
