I was listening to the news yesterday on NPR, cursing at the latest accounts of American deaths in Iraq. What a waste, I thought. “We haven’t accomplished anything over there and cannot accomplish anything.”
My wife, however, disagreed, arguing that we have indeed accomplished something. “We’ve ruined a country.”

To which country was she referring? USA or Iraq?
Good question, OR. I guess I’d have to say both. (In this country think about the budget deficit. And then the moral deficit. W.r.t. Iraq you don’t have to think–it’s obvious.
As she was replying to Snake’s comment about how we haven’t accomplished anything “over there”, OR, I susPECT she means Iraq. [But we're not in very good shape, either!]
As far as making a mess there (in the area known for centuries as Mesopotamia), Iraq’s been continually overrun, overthrown & left in a state of instability NUMEROUS times ever since it’s area was Defined by the British & French in 1917-18 & ruled as a British colony- once the League of Nations “gave” it to England as a mandate!
(Gee… ya wonder why they’re over there w/ us NOW? Same reason as when England invaded Iraq in 1941. OIL! How quickly people forget… or are easily fooled. Go read.)
Well put, MP. Yes, Iraq has been overrun & overthrown before. But it’s never had destruction like this wreaked upon it (all in the name of democracy!). That’s the kind of thing that gives democracy a bad name.
Good GOD, you’d think we were still in the Shock&Awe mode!
No, no, Snake… WE aren’t “wreaking” untold destruction on Baghdad. Far from it. We are in the midst of a growing Conflict between sides battling for power, trying to play Umpire. We’re the foriegn invaders trying to install a puppet gov’t- YET AGAIN, but THIS time, we’re outmanned & out-committed {is that a word?:}~
By the way, this latest Insurgency of OURS doesn’t old a candle to the Ottoman “fist” that held control up thru the Great War. And it’s an insurgency guided (?) by a simple-man who’s Faithfully convinced HIS God is guiding him down the true path towards establishing peace & harmony.
[Unfortunately, they're Muslim!] ‘God’ help us all…
