EXERCISE YOUR NOGGIN — by Steve Nadis

An article in yesterday’s Boston Globe discussed new products for mental fitness targeting aging baby boomers, which are the only kind of baby boomers to be found. Some of these cognitive exercise products cost hundreds of dollars. What ever happened to crossword puzzles. Or my old standby, sudoku?

Interesting. I have a theory that mental deterioration is the biggest fear for aging boomers. The generation before that (the current 80 year olds) worried much more about financial insolvency (ending up destitute, homeless, etc.). But the boomers sit up nights worrying that they’ll become dotty, forgetful and powerless.

It says a lot about the social conditions in which boomers grew up (if they grew up), and even more about their concept of power (intellect) versus their parents’ concept of power (money).

Good points, Gatemouth. There is a broad range, of course, but most boomers were born in an age of affluence and that is reflected in the endless fascination with evermore sophisticated (at least superficially) and expensive consumer products.

Oh, puh-leeeeeze! Crossword puzzles are soooooo 20th century. And sudoku doesn’t help those of us with math phobia.

    Books are good…
One can borrow All SORTS for free!
(I hear you get ‘em at the library)

  6. gatemouth says:

    They still make books?

  7. Snake says:

I hope so, Gatemouth, because that’s what I’ve devoted much of the last year to. And Roses, they say sudoku has nothing to do with math; it’s all about logic. Do you have a problem w/logic too?

you forget that it isn’t what someone wants to buy - but what someone else thinks they can SELL. No serious money in crosswords.

but software, now, created to cater to fearful near-retirees and still the largest demographic swathe available for harvest, - now THERE is a market with potential!

    ;-)

  9. Snake says:

Well put, Hayden. Of course people can’t sell unless others are willing to buy.

& don’t forget all the Herbs & nutritive products they’re always pushing to “help with mental acuity”…
(Ginko biloba hasn’t gotten so much attention since botanists determined it was one of the oldest plants on this Earth. Just Don’t take it if ya have “inflammation” happening in yer noggin… e-GADS!)

&, yes, gm, they still make books. Still the best storage medium going, U can still ‘read’ em after +500 years!
