GREAT MOVIE QUOTES (“Into the Wild”) — by Steve Nadis

In his review of Sean Penn’s latest effort, “Into the Wild,” Peter Keough of the Boston Phoenix wrote last week: “As Penn sees it, Chris [McCandless] is a pure soul like the Buddha or St. Francis… As I see it, Penn and Chris are both self-indulgent bores.” (And as I see it–not having bothered with the movie itself, Keough may well be right.)

    H-U-H?
    Who’s Chris McCandless?
A fellow actor in the flick? Sean’s character?
[Peter's quote doesn't clear that up.]
And if U haven’t “bothered w/ the movie”, maybe it’s best not to express opinion on any review. ;)
In fact, noting the ‘caliber’ of these last 2 Posts, you may well want to not bother with as many… -Marco Polo

  2. I went into this movie mainly to see
Emile, because not only do I love the work
that he does, but obviously he’s extremely
good looking. HA. But I felt stupid for not
going into this movie realizing how much it
would actually change my life. I found this
movie unreal. It was something that I just couldn’t
get off of my mind after it ended. It started to
make me think. It started to change my life.
And it was a good thing. I found this to be
one of Emile’s best films he’s ever taken upon.
This movie was absolutely phenominal and it’s
something that I’ll never forget. It’s one of those
films I just can’t get over. I want to watch
it over and over just for the fact that its so
    inspiring.

Thanks Melissa — Maybe Peter Keough was wrong to write what he did, and maybe I was wrong to write what Peter Keough said. –SNAKE

Everything in moderation. Chris may to an extent be a self-indulgent young man, however what 20-23 year old extremist isn’t self-indulgent to some extent.
The movie account for this “self-indulgence”. At several points throughout the movie Chris’ motives are taken into question by his companions of the road. Was he truly an idealist or rather an angered youth, damaged goods from a troubling upbringing. I personally believe he was both.
So regardless of Chris’ character(moral), he did carry a message that stimulates the mind. And that alone makes the movie worth viewing.

Thanks Taylor, you make me think about breaking my usual policy of not seeing the movies I write about. –Snake

This movie is so inspiring b/c it thouches on an idealism of freedom we all share. The concept of being free in nature, with no responsabilites and duties is an extremelly appealing lifestyle, yet it can’t be sustained. Its one of those things are only perfect when not experienced. I mean, sure it would be fun to do that for a while, but just like everything else it would have its bad moments. Still movie is a great inspirations for seeing things from a different perspective, and maybe taking a few days trip to the middle of nowhere! Best movie of the year!
