A BRAVE NEW WORLD, AND A GREAT NEW WORD — by Steve Nadis

A BBC radio report on the Blackberry, the super-cell phone/internet-capable PDA, etc., said that the palmtop device is so addictive it is often called “Crackberry.” I gotta get me one of them.

  1. Crackberries give you Blackberry blisters, from what I’ve read (another new word). All the same, I’m justed tempted as you are by the letter high it claims to offer. Actually, the Blackberry started out as a glorified pager and morphed into the glorified email device it is now, just a simpler, more portable device for feeding the same addictions as your laptop, as crack is to coke. The high the addict seeks are in fact the new messages on the screen, which he keeps checking the way a crack head keeps hitting his pipe. Or the way I keep checking your blog for new entries and responses to my comments!

    Maybe I shouldn’t respond. I don’t want to encourage an unhealthy habit… S.
