WORDS FROM THE WISE (Part 716) — by Steve Nadis

Marilyn vos Savant, the high IQ record holder of PARADE Magazine fame, offered some good advice yesterday about not being a know-it-all: 1. Never correct anybody else unless absolutely necessary. 2. Don’t offer advice unless asked to.

I personally have been guilty of both these sins and will try to toe the line. If you’ve committed any transgressions of this sort, I’d like to tell you now that there’s a better way to behave. I’d also like to advise you to follow Marilyn’s recommendations. She’s smarter than any of us and knows of which she speaks.

  1. Well, technically speaking, she’s been asked to write an advice column…Correct me if I’m wrong.

I think you’re right. And I think her advice on this point is quite sound… -S

“Do not make corrections unless necessary” is just evil: it just indicates that you are a supremacist who thrives in other people’s ignorance. If you believe they are wrong, you should tell them. Truth is subjective, but your opinion might contribute to make them better citizens. For example, if somebody says “god told me to bla bla bla”, you could kindly clarify for them that a god does not exist, and that “god” is clearly an invalid concept as it cannot be validated against any reality.

“Do not offer advice unless asked to” is just wrong: it just indicates that you have no self confidence, no trust in your own capabilities, that you are just a lackey to the “scientists”, to the “technocrats” and to the fascist authorities. Instead you should offer your advice and opinion for analysis and discussion.

Most stupid people do not correct and do not advise only because they are stupid. Of course, if you read “Parade” you gotta be pretty stupid.

    A Philosophical Platform

The text here below, “A Philosophical Platform”, summarizes in the most concise way the conceptual reality of humanity. This is neither a school of thought, nor propaganda for a certain belief, nor a concoction of superstitions. It is pure philosophy, “philos sophos”, love of knowledge, passion for wisdom, and therefore not a path that your learn or follow, but a conceptual structure that you arrive at by thinking rationally and reasoning logically.

    A PHILOSOPHICAL PLATFORM

1 The human mind processes concepts.

2 Valid concepts are those that represent reality.

3 Reality is composed by matter, by mental processes, and by social phenomena.

4 Matter is composed by all tangible objects, simple and complex.

5 Mental processes are all the activities of the human mind.

6 Social phenomena are all the manifestations of all social relations.

7 All reality can be experienced, directly or indirectly.

8 All concepts of reality acquired through direct experience are valid.

9 All concepts of reality acquired through indirect experience need to be validated by each individual.

10 Validation is the process of relating the concept back to the reality that it represents, namely matter, mental processes, or social phenomena.

11 The individual is at the same time matter, repository of mental processes, and component of social phenomena.

The above text describes all reality, subjective and objective, narrow and broad, particular and general, small and big, tree and forest, personal and professional, individual and social, superfluous and essential, inconsistent and consistent, the symbol and the content, the form and the substance, the part and the whole.
