ASSUMING MY RIGHTFUL PLACE — by Steve Nadis

I was doing some research on the web about a Finnish mathematician famous for his work on Riemann surfaces when I suddenly jumped to a different webpage–that of SLURPEE NATION. I’m still not sure how I got there. I didn’t push any button that said: Take me to SLURPEE NATION. But I ended up there nevertheless. I’m not a religious man but perhaps “somebody up there” has decided this is where I really belong.

    How do we know that Finnish mathematicians famous for their work on Riemann surfaces don’t wildly enjoy Slurpees? Maybe they founded Slurpee nation and inserted a link into the site you were browsing? I only got as far as Riemann sums in high school and college and so, have only a mild yen for Slurpees. I did meet someone from Finland, though.

    Thanks PDL — I now see this story has more sides to it than a Riemann surface, & it’s equally slippery. Glad to hear you’ve met someone from Finland. I have too.
