THE NOT SO LUCKY STORE -- by Steve Nadis

All of us have wondered about these odd little businesses that survive year after year with seemingly no business. One of the places I've long speculated about in this regard was the Lucky Store--a funny little outlet on Mass. Ave., near Central Square, that sold weird Chinese toys and knickknacks, some for as little as 50 cents. Our girls loved going there to get gifts for their friends. But we seemed to be the store's only customers, yet this odd little outpost hung on for years. Until now. They are finally going "out of business." But I wonder if they were ever really "in business"?

1 - Speaking of stores that seem to hang in there with no appreciable business... what IS it with all these GNC outlets?? (General Nutrition Center)
I see one in every large town, usually along a strip where the rent can't be THAT cheap!
All lit up...neatly stacked displays.
What do they do... make 800% profit on all their powdered whey & super vitamin supplements? :O (Comment this)

2 - Good point, :O, we all know places like that. Stores, restaurants, etc. & some of them hang on amazingly long... --Snake (Comment this)

3 - When I see stores like that I always assume the owners are either independently wealthy and opened the store as a lark, or are staggeringly incompetent and will eventually close with tens of thousands of dollars in debt. (Comment this)

4 - When I see a place like that, I assume it's a CIA front. (Comment this)

5 - If this is a CIA front, it's the best cover in history. My daughter subscribes to the "independently wealthy" theory, but I'm skeptical... (Comment this)
