HANDBALL IN THE MOVIES -- by Steve Nadis

Last week, I watched the movie "Prime," which came out on DVD a few months ago. The movie (starring Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep) is OK, as contemporary romantic comedies go--nothing special, and certainly not worth writing about in a discriminating blog like this except for one thing: In the opening montage of New York City street scenes, handball was featured, which may be a movie first. At least I can't recall seeing handball in a big commercial picture before. However, I only recommend the movie for the true handball aficionado since the handball shots--good as they were (and they were, indeed, outstanding)--lasted less than two seconds.

1 - Snake, Snake, Snake--have you forgotten Billy Crystal playing handball in "When Harry Met Sally"? And didn't Peter Riegert play handball in "Crossing Delancey"? And wasn't there a famous handball scene in "Debbie Does Dallas"? Oh wait--that wasn't handball.

Never mind. (Comment this)

2 - Thanks Gatemouth for the jog to my apparently fallible memory. I saw both those pictures year ago but apparently forgot the most memorable parts. So when the lady in the restaurant said, "I'll have what she's having," she was actually referring to handball? (Comment this)

4 - It seems Freud got at least one thing right: There certainly is something primal about smashing a ball with your bare (or almost bare) hands. (Comment this)

7 - I saw an old black and white movie, I think with Jack Webb, where 2 guys were playing 4 wall, and one of them turned around and clocked the other guy. Been trying to did it up, but no luck so far :( (Comment this)
